This book was written before J R R Tolkien wrote The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and has never been printed before. It’s called The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun and is a retelling of the Norse tales of Sigúrd the Völsung and the Fall of the Niflungs. It has been edited by Christopher Tolkien and will hit shelves on May 5. It is available for pre-order now.

Barb’s Bookshelf is giving away a free copy of this book to one lucky winner. The drawing will occur on March 31st, 2009 at 10 am Eastern Standard Time, and the winner will be notified at that time. Winners must reply with address the book is to be sent to within one week or their win will be forfeit and a new name drawn. The book will be pre-ordered from Amazon on April 1st, 2009 and will ship from Amazon when it becomes available. In the unlikely event that Amazon withdraws this book from their website, the winner will be allowed to choose another book of equal or lesser value.

Anyone who is a member of the forums in good standing will be eligible for a free copy of this book. If you are not already a member of the forums, all you have to do to enter is sign up to be a member of the forums. Each member receives one entry into the drawing.

Spamming of the forum is not allowed and will disqualify you from the drawing.

    I’ve loved JRRT since I discovered him in Jr. High. I remember crying in college when he died. I’d love to get this book! (I’d go nicely with my copy of his translation of “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.”)

    It’s an previously unreleased manuscript that is edited by Christopher Tolkien. It’s due to come out in May.
